Error at stage 3B

We are soon to release a .NET 4.0 application and I am currently researching Licensing implementation. I was using the guides you have on the site in attempt to license our product and I got an exception when protecting process was in proggress.

Here is the log information on the matter:

RE:Error at stage 3B

Hi,

As you can see from the message, there are a number of things in play and we dont have much to go on to narrow it down. Can you supply some further details please:-

1) does the error go away if you dont protect the method containing the code which is calling Contains(Guid) ? - i.e., if you stop protecting all the methods, does it work? If it does, re-enable them on-by-one until you isolate the offending method

2) (Assuming that it can be isolated to a single method) Can you supply a minimal snippet of the code that causes the issue

3) Can you indicate what way you're triggering the ProtectCmd - i.e. asre you using SLPS_PROTECT, or are you creating your own command? (i.e., if you're not doing it via SLPS_PROTECT is it possible that you need to add System.Core to the Additional references)

4) it may be possible that the incorrect ILASM version is being used, you can eleminate this as a possibility by ensuring the V4 version is in both the 2.0 and 4.0 tools directories as mentioned in http://www.inishtech.com/Support/Forum/Forum-View.aspx?forumid=5&threadid=423

Hope this is helpful for your problem. And if you have any further questions, please let us know

RE:Error at stage 3B

 1. If i stop protecting all methods then it works. I havent tried protecting some method that is not calling Contains(Guid).

2. Unfortunately I won't be able to do this since I really don't know which part of the code is calling this. Would take a long time...

3. I have no idea what ProtectCmd is so I am probably not doing anything related to it on purpose. I am using everything as default.

4. I will try this approach and report if the problem is still presisting.

RE:Error at stage 3B

Ok, so I managed to protect the code when I did the workaround you mentioned in point 4. Unfortunately I ran into a different problem when starting the application. It stops working before anything appears on the screen.

I tried protecting any method in the application but everything failed. I am not sure how to proceed here.

Also, when I select protect some method (I assume App.ctor is enough) will all of the other code get scrambled and become unreadable to the reflector or only that specific method?

RE:Error at stage 3B

Hi Paulius,

Good to hear that the workaround is working for you to protect the code.

You also mentioned that you met a different problem, could you give us more details like what process is causing such a problem, the Error message and pleases provide us the Log file which you can find %temp%\slp.log. These would be really helpful for us to diagnose the problem. And it's a good practice to provide these information every time you meet a problem.

For the question about whether readable to the Reflector, when you're protecting some of the methods out of all of them, only the protected methods will become unreadable to the Reflector. Other unprotected methods will stay the same and  are readable to the Reflector.

Thanks for your enquiry and be waiting for your further details

RE:Error at stage 3B

I have no log to show you. I would post it imediately, but because the error happends when I try to start the protected application it throws me a windows dialog saying "AppName has stopped working..." and I get no idea why.

I am able to reproduce this with any .NET 4.0 WPF project, even a freshly created one.

This is the only thing I was able to dig up from event viewer:

Faulting application name: LicenseTest.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4dda3d7d

RE:Error at stage 3B

Hi,

I'm not sure what conclusion you're drawing here. What you're seeing here seems to be a straightforward case of what happens when a .NET application lets an Exception escape from main(). This unfortunately doesnt include the details of the underlying exception which would allow one to determine the cause.

(Assuming that you've just protected your app constructor and not added any exception handling to a wizard-generated app) While its possible to protect the constructor of your App class, you're better off starting the app and/or showing a splash screen before running any protected code etc.

If you do this, and instead e.g. protect a method associated with an application activity, the default exception management of a WPF app will trap the exception. (In your case to get to the bottom of your issue, you could add some logging of the exception you're experiencing)

We also advise adding a VerifyInstalled check to your Main() method - and as part of that work, you should also be handling the exception that can be triggered by that as discussed in our Knowledge Base 7: http://support.inishtech.com/KB7.

If you have further problems, please let us know.

RE:Error at stage 3B

I understand as much on exception handling.

The only conclusion I am drawing here is that the code protector is somehow breaking the application.

What I did is added a simple button and on click event and I selected to protect it. Implemented some exception handling to throw a messagebox to show what was the error and I still get the same result.

It seems that application is breaking before the App is created and/or initialized.

I also noticed something else... It throws an error when trying to login to server:

<snipped exception details>

Hi, Unfortunately, this is from the Code Protector application (see the EXE name at the start of the message) and shows an error logging on - typically this is due to an invalid login attempt

Unfortunately this doesnt tell us anything about what's going wrong in your protected application itself (the exe name would be different)
